Youth represent 26% of the population of Washington County, and although the schools do an admirable job of keeping our children safe and challenged, how are we doing as a community when our kids are out of school? These are questions for all of us. Too many children of all socioeconomic levels and cultural or ethnic backgrounds are unsupervised and at-risk outside of school hours. Childcare is not available for all who need it. In Washington County there are available slots for only 16% of over 38,000 children under the age of 5. For over 97,000 school age children, there are just 2,147 slots in after school programs. The cost of childcare is outstripping many families’ ability to pay. The average annual cost for a childcare center is $10,200 a year, often as much or more than college. Budget cuts that slashed public assistance benefits cripple single parents whose expenditure for childcare is often 50% or more of their annual income. For many single parents, the question is “Will I make enough at this job to pay for childcare?”
Let’s talk about the problem and brainstorm solutions.
