The School Assistance For Refugee Newcomers (SAFRN) program is looking for volunteer tutors to work with refugee students (grades K-12) who are attending public schools in the Portland tricounty area and have lived in the U.S. less than one year. They currently have Afghan, Bhutanese, Burmese, Congolese, Cuban, Iraqi, and Somali students waiting to be matched with tutors.
Volunteers will spend 1.5 – 2 hours per week with their students, usually in the students’ homes, helping with English, homework, and learning about American culture.
Volunteer training and support is provided. A free background check is required. If you would like to help refugee youth, while learning about a different culture and exploring your skills, please contact the SAFRN program, as they would love to have your help and participation for this ongoing project.
The SAFRN program is administered by the Portland office of Lutheran Community Services Northwest http://www.lcsnw.org , in partnership with Catholic Charities and SOAR (Sponsors Organized to Assist Refugees).
